Fulfilling the aphorism
It’s interesting, if not comforting, to get some sort of “official” confirmation of what we already knew: that the US-led War on Terror and occupation of Iraq has served to give strength and focus to worldwide terrorism. So suggests a consensus report on the State of Play by 16 intelligence agencies within the US government, in their classified National Security Estimates. So now, they say, the threat of Terrorism is worse than before the war to stamp it out. Hmm, violence begets violence. Now why didn’t we think of that before?

Does anyone believe this “gee shucks” faux naivete of the current US regime? Sure, Bush is no mental giant, but the neocons as a group are far from idiots, and anyone who thinks Bush acts independently of his cabinet has seen too much “Commander in Chief”. It’s simply not credible to suggest this has come as a surprise to them. They knew an increase in terrorism would result from an Iraq invasion, and they have acted accordingly, either regardless of that knowledge or because they wanted to achieve that result.
So, the real question we have to ask is, in the face of a US regime either willing to risk or intent on creating a state of perpetual global war, what do we do about it?
