Robert Holdstock, 1948-2009
Robert Holdstock has died at the age of 61. The author of many exceptional works of fantasy and science fiction, Holdstock will be best remembered for his outstanding novel Mythago Wood, a story about the way mythology folds itself into human consciousness, and consciousness folds itself back into mythology. It is also a very simple and powerful story of a soldier returning to Herefordshire, England at the end of World War Two and his attempt to find out what has happened to his family. This is one of those novels best approached knowing very little of the plot; as such, no further details will be forthcoming.
By all accounts, he was a lovely person as well. Robert Holdstock will be sorely missed.

Sad news. I first came across RH’s work in the late Seventies, when he was writing ‘regular’ science fiction. He was part of a post-New Wave group of British sf writers like Christopher Priest and Richard Cowper. Of those three, only Priest is still with us, which is rather sobering. Mythago Wood is a very good, atmospheric novel, the sort of book to settle down with on a winter’s night. It takes you into the heart of England – I can still remember the ‘feel’ of the book, though it’s nearly thirty years since I read it. You’re right not to summarise the plot.
