Hi Chris,
The Golden Aurealis for novels actually went to The Pilo Family Circus.
Cheers
Ben
Corrected. Thanks, Ben.
But now I’m *really* confused. As if it wasn’t enough that Shaun Tan’s wordless 128-page graphic novel won two awards under short story, now we find that the outstanding book of the year was tied with another book in its subcategory.
There’s only one thing better than winning an award, and that’s picking holes in the process :-)
Ties are a long and honorable part of award giving. There have been ties for the World Fantasy Award. What’s the big deal?
It’s not the tie, Ellen, it’s that it tied in its subcategory and then won the Golden Aurealis for outstanding novel of the year — in which case, why did it tie in its subcategory instead of winning outright?
The answer of course is quite mundane — the Golden Aurealis is chosen by the convenors from the judge’s picks. And of course the convenors will have their own opinions that may differ from that of the judges. But, you know, if there’s a chance to stir up a bit of talk about the awards…
Ah yes. I can see the perplexity..but you solved the mystery :-)
