Bear-baiting, coming soon to a cinema near you

Consider, if you will, this studio publicity quote for the upcoming Captivity:

Held captive in a cell, Jennifer is subjected to a series of terrifying, life-threatening tortures that could only be conceived by a twisted, sadistic mind.

…and then we film it for your viewing pleasure.

A twisted, sadistic mind, eh? Is that description meant to apply to the film’s creative team? Or is it for the target audience?

Well, it’s also “shows us the true terror of the crimes of abduction and confinement that are committed every day by serial killers and psychopaths at large.”

Wow, they’re telling me exactly this sort of thing is happening *every day*! As we all know serial killers and psychopaths lurk on every suburban street in every city and town.

“It’s a disturbing and raw, yet classy and thought provoking film which will leave you terrified, and looking over your shoulder as you leave the theatre wondering if you could be next.”

Is there nothing this flick doesn’t do? It’ll make me think at the same time it terrifies the living daylights out of me (that’s some trick if they can pull it off) and it’ll convince me I’m in constant danger every minute of every day. How classy is that! Remind me, why would I want to see this movie?

I went through a bit of a stage of being appalled at this kind of slasher crap the other year, before coming across an ancient copy of ‘Fangoria’ magazine in an box somewhere and remembering my own love, at 14-15 or so, of crappy slasher flicks.

These kind of films fundamentally aren’t for us grumpy old men types - they’re for 15 year old boys who get to irritate their parents by liking them, I think.

Now, I’m still kind of appalled on principle, but I’m also somewhat comforted by the fact that I used to like them, but was affected so little by the genre that I’m now apalled by it.

Which is a good thing, I think.

Yeah, the torture horror subgenre is a bit popular after Saw, I suppose.

Don’t want to be grumpy old men, boys! :)
