Talking Squid‘s server was becoming gummed up with starchy old stats so it’s time to clear the database. For the record, the Squid has received a total of 1,590,210 hits of which 139,308 are unique. This is about to be reset to zero. (Actually, instead of wiping the database I trimmed it by 1.1M records using a technique described in WordPress Tip: Reduce the size of the WP-Shortstat database.)

Our most popular post ever is Dr Seuss Goes War! (25,709 hits), followed a long way back by Rob Hood’s Enter the Squid (10,995 hits) — Rob’s photo of the giant Gezora statue seems to be a Google Images favourite — and in third place comes In defence of randomized control trials, part 4 (7830 hits). The rest of the top ten is, in order, Cupcake! attempts XKCD (which was an unmitigated failure of creativity on my part, but it shows the enduring popularity of the original XKCD comix), With friends like Furedi, my favourite patent application in Why isn’t *this* ever suggested?, a defence of the virtues of ancillary material in On story collections, the self-incriminatory I Hate Ben Peek, by Ben Peek, the biggest story in evolutionary theory ever (and ignored by the scientific mainstream) Cambrian rabbit falsifies evolution, and Cat Sparks’s confessional tale of love and latex, My afternoon as a rubber suit monster.

As for the most popular keywords…apart from the obvious ones that relate directly to posts, all I can say is the internet has unleashed a whole universe of weird. Recent entries include “how to insult an Australian” (answer: try to do an Australian accent; you just can’t, OK?; don’t even try), “vampire combine with Non-scary zombies,” “real life polygyny experiences,” and, disturbingly, “getting caught using a rubber suit.” And those are the ones I’m prepared to make public.
